Volunteers are near and dear to our hearts at La Posada Providencia. We can never pay them what they are worth, but we hope they know how appreciative we are to have them. We know we are blessed. We are reminded of this when one of our volunteers
leaves us.
Recently, we said goodbye to one of our ESL tutors. “This is a special place. People here are good hearted,” says Cutter Uhlhorn, a volunteer for La Posada. Cutter has volunteered with La Posada’s ESL classes since 2014. He learned of La Posada from his church, St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, in Harlingen. The introduction to the
La Posada ministry filled Cutter with a spirit of action. He acknowledged, “I had the time and there was an opportunity to serve,” so he decided to share his talents with us. We are so glad that he did.
When Cutter moved to Austin, he wanted to continue serving others and again volunteered his time as an ESL tutor for Casa Marianella, a shelter for displaced immigrants that offers services and promotes self-sufficiency. Moved to do more service for others, Cutter joined the Peace Corps for two years serving in Riohacha, located in the South American country of Colombia. When returning to the Valley, Cutter always made time to go back to La Posada and volunteer for afternoon ESL class.
Once again, service to others calls Cutter. He is joining the United States Navy. His interest in the Navy occurred while in Riohacha. Cutter explained that a medical naval group arrived and helped many of the people there, “seeing them do so much made me want to be a part of it.”
Cutter blessed La Posada with his time and talents. We will miss him and pray for the success of his future endeavors. We know he will make a lasting and meaningful mark on whomever he serves.
