The Laughter of a Child

The Laughter of a Child

Sister Alice cleverly uses a puppet show to teach English

Sister Alice Gerdeman, CDP, from Cincinnati, Ohio, always brings such joy to La Posada Providencia.  Sister Alice is a Sister of Divine Providence of Kentucky and we are so lucky that she chose us to visit.

Sister Alice stayed at La Posada for the whole month of October this past year and she was such an asset to La Posada.  On a wonderful, sunny day, Sister Alice came up with a grand idea to entertain the children residing at La Posada.  A former teacher, her mind started churning when she saw an empty water heater box destined for the trash.  She came up with the idea of creating a puppet stage.   The children helped Sister Alice to construct the stage and the children colored the outside of the box as best they could.  They were all so overjoyed to participate in this creation. Not wavering from using this time as an English lesson, Sister Alice and the children spoke about their favorite animals and the children made hand puppets of their animals from paper bags.  They also wrote three to four-line stories for the grand performance.  You could feel the excitement in the air.  All of the children did a great job presenting their stories.  They were giddy and nonstop laughter came from all of them.  They were also very proud of themselves as they recited their stories in English.  They all gathered together and did their play for all the La Posada staff and volunteers.  They were so wonderful and one of the boys that participated told the social worker attending the performance that making the puppets was the most fun he had in his whole life!

How wonderful it is to hear the laughter of a child.  A simple water heater box helped create such wonderful memories for all the children.  La Posada Providencia thanks you Sister Alice.
