Tables are Turned

Tables are Turned

Usually, on this site, you will find La Posada Providencia introducing a volunteer who has helped us in a variety of ways. Today you will find the “tables are turned” and our volunteer is telling the story and reminding us again to be grateful to those who have gone before us because we are standing on the shoulders of giants.

In our next Tuesdays in Texas, you will find out more about Abigail and her unique story but read now what she has to say in her own words.

On January 24, 2022, I began volunteering at La Posada Providencia.  When I first got there, I was shocked to see that it was a place my family often visited when I was younger. My father is a Cuban immigrant who stayed at a place like La Posada. As a child, I remember my father and I would often visit La Posada Providencia to drop off clothing, offer jobs and transportation. When my aunt came from Cuba in 2006, she stayed at La Posada before moving in with my family. As a child I didn’t grasp what the facility was, I only knew that people lived there, and we would offer them jobs or any other assistance. When I drove up, I immediately knew the place was familiar. When I met the Volunteer Coordinator. Laura Sutherland, I told her about my past visits and how shocked I was to see the development over the years. She was amazed to see how life had come full circle.  We discussed all the development over the years, and it was incredible for me to finally understand what the facility was all about and what they did.  La Posada does not abandon their clients to their fate. They make themselves available even after the clients leave the facility. By doing so, the clients now have resources, or a chosen family to help them continue to move forward.

I learned a lot on my first day, and I felt appreciated. I will continue to offer my time even after my required hours for school. La Posada Providencia is truly an organization that works toward bettering people’s lives and helping them adjust to new areas.
