Meet La Posada’s New Volunteer Coordinator, Laura E. Sutherland

This is Laura E. Sutherland, La Posada’s new Volunteer Coordinator

My name is Laura Sutherland, and I am the new Volunteer Coordinator. I will never forget my first day at La Posada Providencia.  I received a joyful welcome, first from two sweet dogs and a cat. A heartwarming welcome came from the staff and clients, followed by an enjoyable homemade meal with everyone.

Helping others at La Posada allows me to go the extra mile.  It provides me with similar and unforgettable memories of my previous experiences with amazing organizations.  I will never forget my work with United Farm Workers, La Union Del Pueblo Entero, ARISE, Mujeres Unidas, Proyecto Azteca, Texas Rio Grande Legal, and South Texas Civil Rights Project.  A great woman leader invited me to volunteer at Colonias Unidas, and then I joined AmeriCorps.  I was assigned to Iniciativa Frontera, where I trained and was introduced to all the above nonprofits.  It changed my life.

La Posada represents important issues to me like faith, human rights, nature, compassion, and helping those in need with educational tools to succeed.

We are nearly a year into dealing with the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic; how life has changed for most of us! Limiting contact with others, especially those in our social circles has been both challenging and isolating. We long for the touch of a hug from a friend, lunch with extended family, or just being able to be around other people without worrying about getting sick.

One of the things we had to cancel this year was our signature fundraiser, Hands & Hearts. For the past decade, we began the year with our Brunch gala. This year, of course, we could not gather at the event that is a fun morning with friends and neighbors and a significant source of unrestricted funds that we count on to help us keep the shelter operating.

We ask our supporters to consider a gift of $40, the price of one event ticket. We would be most appreciative to advertisers and sponsors or anyone who would like to make a more significant gift. A gift in any amount will be appreciated.

You can donate in a variety of ways. You can mail a check payable to La Posada Providencia to La Posada Providencia, 30094 Marydale Rd, San Benito, TX 78586. Write “2021 Hands & Hearts” on the memo line of your check. You can also donate via our website at LPPShelter.org/events. If you donate online, please also write “2021 Hands & Hearts” in the comments.
