La Posada Honors United Nations Day

Tuesday, November 3, 2015

Students from the the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica from the Brownsville Early College High School make crafts with La Posada clients during United Nations Day.

Every occasion where La Posada Providencia joins hands with a volunteer group is special; however, one recent joining of hands was particularly special. On October 24, 2015, La Posada came together with a group of students, the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica from the Brownsville Early College High School to work on a craft project with our clients. The occasion was to mark United Nations Day. La Posada held a special call to service day to help celebrate.

“United Nations Day commemorates when a group of people from different nations came together and put their differences aside and vowed to help resolve the problems of not only their nation, but also nations around the world,” said volunteer coordinator Adriana Garcia.

Volunteers sang “God Bless America” with all the clients and then worked alongside them on a craft project that will be displayed in the silent auction during our annual Hands & Hearts fundraiser in February. After a full morning of crafts, the volunteers, staff and clients came together to enjoy a wonderful lunch provided by Chick-Fil-A.

“We wanted to celebrate United Nations Day because that is what La Posada does every day. We all put our differences aside and live and work as a family,” Garcia said.

On this particular day, 8 different countries were represented at La Posada. The countries represented include Cuba, Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Guatemala, Honduras, Venezuela and Guinea.  Although there were many different nations and countries represented, everyone came together to represent the United Sates. While we celebrated United Nations Day, we also celebrated all the nations that were represented at La Posada.

Thank you again to Brownsville Early College High School and Chick-Fil-A of Harlingen, TX for making this day possible! United Nations Day is just one of many service days that will be held at La Posada, like us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/lppshelter or contact the volunteer coordinator, Adriana Garcia at (956) 399-3826 or agarcia@lppshelter.com for more information on upcoming events.

A special anecdote: the concept of United Nations Day was particularly meaningful for La Posada staff this year. We were reminded of the mini-United Nations represented by staff and their respective countries of origin. We have staff members from Cuba, Mexico, Colombia and the United States. This past week, on October 30, La Posada’s Communications Specialist, a native of Colombia in South America, acquired his U.S. citizenship. Congratulations Carlos! Our staff diversity serves as a great asset for La Posada’s work.
