La Posada Celebrates World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation
Tuesday, September 8, 2015
(SAN BENITO, Texas) Pope Francis has established September 1 as the annual World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, inspired by the example of the Orthodox Churches who have observed this day for a number of years. Organized by La Posada’s Sister Thérèse Cunningham, SHSp, staff and volunteers celebrated with a prayer service last Tuesday morning.
Sister Thérèse began the celebration by sharing Pope Francis’ message to remind us all that, “Christians are called to an ecological conversion whereby the effects of their encounter with Jesus Christ become evident in their relationship with the world around them…living our vocation to be protectors of God’s handiwork is essential to a life of virtue; it is not an optional or a secondary aspect of our Christian experience.” (Laudato Si, 217)
“As a staff member, it is great that we can all come together and recognize this day with a prayer service,” said Adriana Garcia, Volunteer Coordinator. “It demonstrates the unity that is present here at La Posada not only among our clients but also among the staff members and volunteers.”
The celebration continued with staff and volunteers singing Canticle of the Sun, by David Haas; reflecting on our Earth’s resources and their importance; and sharing their thoughts on what they could do to protect Mother Earth.
Environmental and agricultural sustainability are key issues at La Posada. Clients, staff and volunteers practice recycling, composting, collect rain water, utilize energy efficient appliances, and maintain a produce garden. The shelter is located in the tropical area of the lower Rio Grande Valley that routinely experiences extreme climate conditions – at one extreme high heat and drought; at the other, heavy rains, hurricanes and floods. Managing this environment to minimize water and electric usage, provide soil cultivation and protect vegetation against drought and floods requires optimum conservation and energy-efficient practices.
La Posada Providencia, founded and sponsored by the Sisters of Divine Providence, is a ministry for people in crisis from around the world, who are seeking legal refuge in this country. The shelter staff provides a safe and welcoming home; mentors to promote self-sufficiency and cultural integration; and imparts values which witness God’s Providence in our world.
