Hands & Hearts shows us God’s Providence on Earth

Thank You to all who attended for a memorable 2014 Hands & Hearts Brunch!

Short of  a miracle…

That’s how La Posada Providencia’s Program Director Sister Zita Telkamp, CDP, describes the shelter’s recent Hands & Hearts fundraiser, held Saturday, Jan. 25th. “On January 21st, we had sold only 134 tickets,” Sister Zita recounts. “Five days later, we had 340 guests attending the event and we were scurrying around trying to find places to seat everyone. This was another occasion of Providence being made visible.”

Not only did the community heed the call to attend Hands & Hearts, but it broke an unprecedented record of attendance. In a year in which the number of clients La Posada serves continues to increase, the community responded.

“Lately, La Posada has broken many records on the number of individuals and families served.” Sister Zita said. “Every day, that number is on the rise. However, we feel blessed and confident with the fact that, as the needs of our clients increase, so does the amount of support from the community.” This year’s Hands & Hearts also celebrated La Posada’s 25-year anniversary of “Welcoming the Stranger,” in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. “It was wonderful to see hundreds of people come together to celebrate with us,” Sister Zita said. “We are blessed to have such strong support from our community and beyond.”

Thank you to all of wonderful sponsors, without which this event wouldn't have been possible.

This was the first Hands & Hearts fundraiser event for Alma Gonzalez in her new role as La Posada’s Development Coordinator. She said many “hands and hearts” came together to make it happen.

“The event would not have been possible without the help of our wonderful volunteers; our Brunch Committee and Board of Directors; La Posada’s staff; the St. Louis development staff; and the interns from the University of Texas – Pan Am School of Social Work. Special kudos to the students from St. Joseph Academy and Brownsville Early College High School – Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica; and the Boy Scouts from Marine Military Academy Troop 22.  All worked together and did an excellent job assisting guests and making sure everything was in order. In our hearts, we imagine our event being successful, but we know it takes many hands to make it happen. La Posada is blessed to have all of this great support.”

In the end, more than $50,000 was raised to benefit the shelter. The proceeds will go a long way in providing hundreds of homeless men, women and children a safe place to sleep, clean clothes to wear and a warm meal to share.

Thank you to our guests, volunteers, sponsors and donors and thank you to the Lord for making His Providence visible in this world through you.
Happy 25-year anniversary, La Posada Providencia. Here’s to many more!
