Earth Day: Restore our Earth

Earth Day: Restore our Earth

This past week at La Posada, we celebrated Earth Day with the theme, “Restore our Earth.”  Client Mentor, Sister Thérèse Cunningham, SHSp, commenced our celebration with a presentation on recycling and composting, two approaches we practice daily at the shelter. Sister then had us all think about personal ways we can commit to restoring the earth. Some of us hope to use less plastic and garden more, while others pledged to meatless Mondays. The celebration continued outdoors as we planted a new tree and flowers throughout the shelter grounds. Together, we blessed our vegetable garden hoping for health, longevity, and prosperity.

The practices Earth Day commemorates are year-round at La Posada.  We consciously practice water preservation by collecting rainwater from our gutters to water the shelter gardens. We air dry laundry to use less energy and collect all recyclables including, plastics, paper, steel/ aluminum cans, and cardboard. Daily we gather fruit/vegetable waste, coffee grounds, eggshells, and grass clippings to supply our shelter compost. With these collaborative efforts, we hope to lead by example and influence our clients to incorporate habits to restore our earth.
