Caring Hands Aid La Posada From Across the U.S.

(SAN BENITO, Texas)  From all corners of Texas and the U.S., volunteer groups continue to lend a helping hand to La Posada and the hundreds of immigrant men, women and families who arrive here every year.

La Posada had the privilege of welcoming and working with two very enthusiastic volunteer groups this past week. The first group that volunteered with La Posada was from White River Christian Church, in Indiana. They arrived ready to work on Thursday, Oct. 15. The group participated in tutoring clients in their ESL classes, preparing a meal, and completing yard work. The volunteers also participated in a traditional La Posada communal lunch; they heard, first-hand, from clients some of their heart breaking yet heartwarming stories.

“Their energy and enthusiasm to work was inspiring and admirable,” said Volunteer Coordinator Adriana Garcia.

Our clients enjoyed the new faces and the volunteers loved meeting and talking with them.

“I loved hearing the stories of the clients,” said Susan, one of the volunteers. “It’s amazing to hear where they’re from and how far they have traveled. It’s great to hear how free they feel.”

The second group came to us on Saturday, Oct. 17, from the University of the Incarnate Word, in San Antonio, TX. This group came as part of the University’s annual social justice trip and has been volunteering with La Posada for five consecutive years. La Posada strives to give the students a more personal perspective on social justice.

“We truly enjoy working with university students because it is refreshing to see so many young adults interested in social justice and immigration,” Garcia said.

The students assisted clients with their Saturday chores which included washing and vacuuming cars, cooking lunch, tending the vegetable garden, and cleaning up the butterfly garden. The group also participated in an impromptu soccer game with the clients and their children.

“La Posada is an amazing place full of even better people who have been through a lot and still find themselves able to smile,” said Incarnate Word volunteer Megan Davis. “This is a place of hope.”

La Posada continues to be a conduit of hope for the clients that come through here and it is great to be able to share that hope with our volunteers so that they can take it back with them and feel inspired to continue to help change people’s lives.

Lastly, La Posada wishes to give a BIG thank you to all the volunteers with White River Christian Church and the University of Incarnate Word for spending their time with our clients. Also a special thank you to Jessica Miller and Jean Loden for thinking of La Posada and also for sharing these wonderful volunteer groups with us.

If you have a group or know of a group that is looking for a unique and rewarding volunteer experience you can contact the Volunteer Coordinator, Adriana Garcia at (956) 399-3826 or at agarcia@lppshelter.org.
