Volunteer Coordinator Adriana Garcia talks UTRGV students about volunteering  at La Posada Providencia on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

(SAN BENITO, Texas) This past week, La Posada Providencia had the privilege of welcoming two new volunteers, Samantha de la Cruz and Cindy Guillen, from the Levis Outlet Store located in Mercedes, Texas. The two volunteers offered their time and efforts tutoring clients during their ESL lessons. They completed their service hours as part of Levis employee monthly day of service. Our clients and staff greatly appreciate them and all of our volunteers for the time they take to share their skills with us.

La Posada also wants to thank the University of Texas–Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) for inviting us to participate in “The Stomp” – a celebration held in the Grand Saloon at the Brownsville Campus to help welcome students to the university, held Tuesday, Sept. 15.

“It was wonderful seeing so many students and so many different agencies getting involved with this event,” said Volunteer Coordinator Adriana Garcia, who introduced UTRGV students to La Posada’s mission. “We greatly appreciate events like these because it provides us with the opportunity to continue to spread the word about what La Posada does in the community. It is also a great way to recruit student volunteers and also just letting students and professors know about the volunteer opportunities we offer.”

La Posada’s staff, clients and volunteers rely deeply on college students committed to making a difference in the community and takes pride in being able to offer a variety of volunteer opportunities to universities throughout the area.

Some universities and local colleges La Posada has worked with in the past include the University of the Incarnate Word, Rice University, Vanderbilt University, Texas State Technical College, South Texas College; University of Texas-Pan America; and the University of Texas-Brownsville.

“We look forward to working with students and staff from UTRGV, both the Brownsville and Edinburg campuses, and welcome the energy, passion and compassion they bring to our shelter,” Garcia said.

If you are a student or a professor interested in some of our student volunteer opportunities, please contact Volunteer Coordinator, Adriana Garcia at (956) 399-3826 or at agarcia@lppshelter.org.
