On Saturday, February 9, La Posada welcomed Brownsville Early College High School’s (BECHS) “Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica” (SHH). SHH is an honor society for high school students. Their purpose is to recognize high achievement of students in the Spanish language and to promote a continuing interest in Hispanic studies. The students belong to the Chapter Dr. Juliet V. Garcia.
Two weeks prior to their visit, this amazing group volunteered at our Hands & Hearts fundraiser. They were busy all throughout the event, assisting during the silent and live auction, as well as selling tickets for our raffle.
Edgar Lazo, president of SHH, and Erick Hernandez, vice-president, organized the group to volunteer at La Posada. Erick’s sponsor, Shirley Muñoz, and four students did an outstanding job working alongside our clients in completing the weekend chores. These wonderful volunteers arrived early in the morning and quickly learned how busy Saturdays at La Posada are. The young men helped with yard work while the ladies assisted with housework, gardening and preparing lunch. Their sponsor, Shirley Muñoz, became our honorary Saturday cook and prepared a wonderful meal for our hungry clients, staff and volunteers.
After a long and hot morning of work, everyone was more than ready to eat. We congregated in the dining room and enjoyed a delicious meal of pork patties, rice, beans, bread and a green salad. During this time, the group had the opportunity to talk with staff and clients and learn about their stories and their stay at La Posada.
La Posada tremendously appreciated SHH’s contribution – and especially the enthusiasm and positive energy they brought to their work. We give our most sincere thanks to this group of young, bright and hard working students, Erick Hernandez, Edgar Lazo, Saul Torres, Blanca Estrada, Keila Garcia, and Shirley Muñoz.
