This adage is a literal description of one of the activities that transpired this past week at La Posada. All summer the sun did shine and caused the most severe drought in southern Texas since 1917. As a result, ranchers are now seeking any type of vegetation to feed their cattle.
Despite the drought, the grass and weeds thrived on approximately seven of our ten acre property. The seven acres are located near the resaca, which may have provided enough water for them to grow. Resacas are old river beds that no longer flow to the Gulf of Mexico, but still hold water. Several weeks ago, we were approached by a rancher who asked to mow and bale the vegetation for free. He also offered to give us a donation when he sold the “hay.”
Last Wednesday and Thursday, tractors with mowers and balers worked over our property and more than 400 bales of hay were “made while the sun did shine.” The rancher gave us a donation of $300 … and we are grateful!
