La Posada Recruits UTRGV Students

Tuesday, October 13, 2015

(EDINGBURG, Texas) Last Friday, La Posada was among 20 local social service and non-profit agencies participating in the University of Texas – Rio Grande Valley’s (UTRGV) Department of Social Work Field Education Fair.  Volunteer Coordinator Adriana Garcia and Development Coordinator Alma Rock attended the event with the goal of recruiting new master-level social work interns for the spring.

“We are very happy with the response we received by attending the fair,” Garcia said. “There were many students that showed great interest in learning more about the La Posada’s work and clients.”

La Posada’s intern program was established in 2012 with master-level students from the University of Texas Pan–American. Since then, nine students have completed  more than 3,000 hours of in-kind work.

Students have shared their many skills and talents in assisting staff with duties such as case management and client intake; grant-writing research; assisting in coordinating and implementing the English as Second Language program; organizing and coordinating volunteer group visits; conducting community presentations; giving orientations to new clients; fundraising participation; and data entry.

“We are very excited to partner up with UTRGV and welcome new interns,” said Program Director Sister Zita Telkmap, CDP. “The intern program has been a blessing to us.”

At this time, La Posada is looking for masters level social work interns completing their foundation field work. Students interested can contact Adriana Garcia at 956-399-3826 or agarcia@lppshelter.org
