These volunteers learned about La Posada by visiting our website. Because of the interest they share in helping immigrants and refugees, they contacted La Posada last year, in December, and made arrangements to come and visit us in 2019.
They were here two days and helped in any way needed, which included baking 60 loaves of banana bread to sell at the upcoming Hands and Hearts Brunch and Auction, making posters and tutoring clients in ESL classes.
While in the lower Rio Grande Valley, the two women visited Mexico to observe and understand more about the immigration process and the people waiting at the border hoping to enter to the United States.
Many thanks to Sister Karen and her sister Joanne!
Jey and Mee traveled to La Posada to make crafts with the clients, focusing on butterflies because “they have no boundaries.” The couple has been creating and participating in these kinds of recreational activities in many communities and tribes in India. They enjoy helping people focus on their spiritual and artistic sides, “to help them discover what can they do with their hands and their imagination.”
They visited La Posada January 17 and 18 along with an instructor from Washington University, Jenny Clark, who made the initial contact with La Posada last year asking to visit.
We are happy they did! Thank you for spurring the creativity and imagination
of our clients!
Maureen and Andy Hudak, of Cleveland, Ohio have been at La Posada for two weeks helping to create handmade items for La Posada’s Hands & Hearts annual gala February 2. Andy, a retired carpenter, has been busy making wood benches while Maureen, a nurse and seamstress, has been busy with sewing projects for the
upcoming fundraiser.
The couple came last year and also made items for the 2018 Hands & Hearts event as well as furniture for the men’s dormitory at La Posada.
For years, Maureen and Andy have traveled around the country in their camper; in 2017 while they were in Denver, they heard about the damages caused by Hurricane Harvey, so they traveled to Port Arthur, Texas with the Cajun Army to help provide disaster relief. Following that volunteer effort, they found their way to McAllen Texas, to Sacred Heart Catholic Church’s Humanitarian Respite Center where they learned about La Posada. That news led them to volunteer with us. Upon leaving last year, they promised to come back to La Posada in 2019. We are so happy they did!
