La Posada Providencia once again was a beehive of activity in preparation for our annual celebration of the beautiful Mexican tradition, Las Posadas. The reenactment of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem in search for a place for Jesus to be born is a tradition since La Posada Providencia’s first Christmas in 1989.
Our celebration began with the formation of a procession led by Mary and Joseph accompanied by two angels, guitarists, and many pilgrims- community members who came to participate in the procession. To the music of Silent Night, a lantern bearer led the way to the first and second houses where Joseph and Mary were refused posada. Then, the procession continued to the third house where Mary and Joseph and all the pilgrims were warmly welcomed. After entering the house, we brought this tradition into the context of today by joining in prayer for our immigrants who come to us looking for shelter.
Four candles were lit in remembrance of all immigrants who have come to La Posada over the past 30+ years, for all immigrants who have lost their lives on the journey to our country, and for our guests who are presently sheltered, La Posada. After the prayer, we enjoyed traditional foods donated for this special occasion. The guitarists led us in singing Christmas carols and an atmosphere of festivity filled the air.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of this year’s celebration of Las Posadas.
